Ok folks,

Today's news headlines are saying that in London, hate
crimes against Muslims are up 600% since the July, 7th
attacks. As disgusting as it is, it's not surprising
to me. What is worth noting is what certain British
officials are accusing to be a major contributor to
terrorism in Britian, and that is multiculturalism.

Gerald Howarth, the shadow defense minister in
Britian, told The Scotsman newspaper that "extremist
Muslims who see the Iraq war as a conflict against
Islam should be considered as treacherous as Soviet
sympathisers during the Cold War". He added, "There
are plenty of other countries whose way of life would
appear to be more conducive to what they aspire to.
They would be happy and we would be happy...If they
don't like our way of life, there is a simple remedy:
go to another country, get out." Asked what if these
people were born in Britain, he replied, "Tough. If
you don't give allegiance to this country, then
leave."

Another high ranking British official, Shadow Home
Secretary David Davis has criticized the government's
policy of multiculturalism as "outdated."

He went on to link terrorism in Britian with it's
policy on multicultural tolerance. He told the Daily
Telegraph of London, "Questions needed to be raised as
to how "the perverted values of suicide bombers" had
been able to take root."

Mr. Davis said, "people from different cultures should
integrate more and urged the government to "build a
single nation," and demand a "respect for the British
way of life."

Here are a few excerpts in an OpEd piece that ran
yesterday in the Canada Free Press. It's entitled
Suicide by Multiculturalism.

"Britain’s multicultural chickens have come home to
roost and Canada’s won’t be far behind. Daily the news
media reveals more and more about the extent to which
the concept of multiculturalism in Britain has failed
to achieve its stated goals. In fact there is now
strong evidence that the policy is detrimental to the
well being of society at large.

Through multiculturalism we sacrifice our own history
and traditions to avoid offending newcomers and making
sure that they are socially comfortable in their new
country. Our assumption is that our cultural mores and
our history are offensive to immigrants who do not
share the same cultural background. Hence, we abandon
our traditions and history in favor of being nice and
undergo the ridiculous contortions around Christmas
with the politburo’s attempt to eradicate it and
replace it with "winter fest" or some other travesty.
While our politically correct attitude toward our own
culture and history gives us the conceit that we are
being ‘inclusive’, to our immigrant neighbors we are
deeply into self-loathing."

Finally, I'd love to hear what folks think about this issue.

Thank you,

      >It's stupid<

      Now, that's articulation!!!
      • fascism at its best
another version of "reverse racism" for the multi-culti age
an excuse for the white folks to stop being nice and "get back" to being all stanchly proud of their culture and traditions, all guilt aside, since after all it will help the fight against terrorism? sheesh its so absurd.

i finally got my cable cut back on yesterday. i left the news on aalll day. i needed the fix.

a major story on cnn headline news, which i watch simply to find out what the media is feeding people these days, was about the argument happening over the NCAA deciding to penalize Florida State University for their Native American nicknamed team, the Seminols. Bush says its ridiculous. sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/...x.html (check out the white boy mascot on a horse in, uh, red face?) CNN kept calling it "political correctness on steroids".

anyway, my point being that this all feels like a part of building fascism, this return to racism as a good thing. and as long as im going on this tangnet, check out this study done on fascism - 14 common characteristics were found: p207.ezboard.com/ftheempty...howMessage
        • Yes, is certainly looks and sounds like fascism everytime I turn on the TV, the radio, whatever--its taking its ugly roots into our political system. It was apparent 20 years ago that this tendency was increasing. There was some hope of the Congress getting power away from the Executive in the 90s...but now...with the party in the Whitehouse kowtowing to the Bushies, its kind of becoming more and more a done deal.

Sorry for pulling this thread out of mothballs, but I agree with the man to a certain extent...it is great to celebrate one's ethnicity, but it goes too far for people to resist assimilation for the sake of the community...it becomes an issue that demands a fair amount of balancing to achieve, but think of it this way...my great grandparents spoke german, went to a german speaking church and never learned english, but my they made my grandfather speak english and get an education and assimilate into aAmerican society, it was fair for them, it is as fair for the newly immigrated.
  • I'm new on this tribe, so you don't know how multicultural I have a tendency to be, and you may judge my response harshly but I'll take the risk because I think this is an interesting and horribly thorny issue.

I have been reading Irshad Manji and Ayaan Hirsh Ali, both of whom are Muslim women writing in critique of Islam, and both of them warn Western countries not be complacent or scared of upholding Western values of secularism and women's rights against the radical Islamists within their borders.

It's a paradox, as they point out, that certain factions come to a secular democracy which has a liberal policy of multiculturalism, and then they profit from its tolerance to promote their own agenda of intolerance. So you may need to be intolerant of intolerance in order to promote tolerance, which is a mental spaghetti that gives me personally a headache and I think most of us too.

Here's an example: In Canada there is a movement to instate Sharia law for Muslim families. In the face of this, "multiculturalism" and tolerance have to abandoned! You have to (or at least I believe you have to) stand up and say, no. Otherwise you're instituting the very fascism you want to avoid. It's one of those nasty issues where it's easy to stand on the sidelines and sling words like "fascism" but much harder to really decide what to do.

Having lived as an immigrant in other peoples' countries most of my life, I must say my approach to other expats has always been, if you don't like it here, and you don't want to adjust, then go home.
