Where is your mountain? What is your river? How did you come here? These are the questions at the heart of A Walk by the Sea (Dancetera label) the long-awaited fourth CD by Mahealani Uchiyama. The Bay Area artist is known for her ethereal and lyrical performances which meld music and dance. Mahealani is an artist of African and Native American ancestry, and her new CD is a collection which speaks of Mahealani's search for the spiritual and cultural traditions of her ancestors.

A Walk by the Sea is a ceremony of thanksgiving, a celebration of community, and of finding home. The collection contains a message of healing and peace which transcends the obstacle of language difference.

Mahealani is a dancer, musician, composer, and kumuhula (instructor of hula and ori). She has performed in such venues as San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts, Te Papa Tongarewa (the National Museum of New Zealand, Aotearoa), and the Grand Heiva in Tahiti, French Polynesia. She has won numerous awards for excellence in traditional Hawaiian and Tahitian dance and music.

She writes, “Is the place where we were born the place were we belong? Is home a physical location, or is it the summation of our experiences? Is who we are what we look like, or is it what is inside of us? The search is the same for all of us. The experiences and the results vary from person to person.

Special guests include Hugh Humphrey, one of the Caribbean's most dynamic percussionists, Ashley Moore, a composer, performer, producer and recording engineer whose award-winning work can be heard on radio, television, theater and film, and Aaron Sencil a drummer, choreographer, costume designer, song writer, and artistic director for the award-winning dance company Hui Tama Nui.

In A Walk by the Sea, Mahealani sings in several languages and calls upon all of us to overlook the superficial differences which divide us, and instead, to celebrate our common humanity.

It is available on CD Baby, eBay, and mahea.com. It will soon appear on iTunes and Amazon.com

One can hear samples of the music at www.mahea.com on the catalog pag

There are a few mails/bulletins making its rounds and I felt I'd like to add my voice to this.

We (as Africans) need to put a stop to this current trend of foreigners adopting African children like its fashion. I really do not care who they are or how rich they are. Our kids should not be allowed to be used as fashion statements. Did getting a little fluffy doggy run out of fashion in the US?

I would really like to question ones motives if they fly halfway accross the world to adopt a child...when on their own doorstep there are orphans & street kids! I ask you...Does America & the UK not have orphans...children in need?? Yes, I admit there is a much higher level of poverty that exists in Africa...but how different is the definition of an orphan in a 1st world country to that of a 3rd world country? Angelina Jolie & Madonna should be ashamed for putting their own 2nd! For pretending that poverty and motherless children do not exist in the countries they are from.

Instead of really reaching out to people and coming to build mud houses in Africa (like U2's Bono & his wife did in Kenya for a year), they instead come to steal a child away from its family & people. Instead of donating the millions they will spend raising that child into another famous brat, they could have fed hundreds of poor other African children.

For those of you who do not really understand what my point is, let me explain...

In Africa our person is shaped mostly by the culture we are born into and it is importent to us as Africans. I feel that is being ignored & disrespected for the sake of money and fame.
Maybe one day they will learn that community and family is above fame and wealth; and that in Africa an orphan may be without parents, but it is never without family. In Africa a community helps to raise a child.

Bring back our children!!

I have attended this event twice and it has completely shifted my perspective of what is possible in America.
The event nationally takes place once a year in a different location deep in the woods, always on a mountain next to a valley. It is titled a leave no trace event(all signs of attendance and stresses on the earth from our presence are corrected) and no money is exchanged for entrance or participation at any point. The attendance is at a minimum of 25,000 every year and this event has progressed since the cultural shifts of the late 60's/early 70's.
informational links/movies can be found at the bottom.
On the 4th of July silent meditation and prayer for peace happens until noon across the entire camp followed a parade of children and celebration. The spiritual, peaceful, and creative find their way to this event from all over the country and the world. The words Rainbow Family in the longer title are both a reference to the group's inclusiveness of all people and to "living lightly," an awareness of the great effect one can have on his or her environment.
Over 60 communities will be representing themselves as camps and serve food, culture, and knowledge for free. Bartering does take place at the event but no currency can be used at the event.Bring nothing but a bowl and spoon if you so choose and you will be abundantly gifted.
This event is a city which exists for a short time and manifests the goals and lifestyle that we pray and work for to spread worldwide/fulltime.
Many religions come to represent but it is not dominated by any one group and alcohol is not allowed in the main area.
This event is wonderful and the people ive met there have educated my mind, body, and spirit.
It has one flaw that stands out and i hope you can help me to solve it.
This event is not ethnically integrated.
Many people of white skin will have love for the earth, hands for the drum, and acceptance of people but the word of thiis event has not traveled to enough communities. I will be one of the few men of color attending this event(african ancestry/cherokee ancestry) and i pray to see the rest of my human family in this wonderful place
we call home.
It does feel like home,
people look you in the eye with honesty and say welcome home at every step.
This is a pow-wow in the sense of spiritual leaders gathering and women receive as much respect as men in this social understanding. Families often come and a village exists for the care of children.

Indigenous grievances aired at hearing

By Joan Marquardt and Stephanie Hedgecoke

San Francisco

Published Oct 28, 2006 12:33 AM

On Oct. 12, more than 200 people packed a room in San Francisco's City Hall to participate in a four-hour Native American Hearing, sponsored by the Human Rights Commission of San Francisco. That the meeting was being held on the "Columbus Day" holiday that celebrates European invasion and genocide in the Americas was not lost on anyone in the room.

The hearing was organized by Marcus Arana (Pikuni), a discrimination investigator for the commission, and a founder of the city's LGBT community center. Arana told WW: "[This] is the first public hearing in San Francisco to hear all the issues facing Native Americans. It is an honor to be able to give back to the community, especially to bring voice to the original local people, the Ohlone, who are not recognized by the federal government, who have no recognized homeland."

When asked by WW what the city might do in response to the testimony taken, Arana gave several examples of what he expects: "The schools lack a culturally competent curriculum. They lack Native teachers despite a huge Native community. It is fair to say many other communities receive financial support for community centers from the city, such as the LGBT center."

Local Indigenous people planned for months just what needed to go on record that night. Their remarks, whether prepared or off-the-cuff, were eloquent and powerful. Most speakers were Native, but non-Native supporters also voiced their support of the struggles and aspirations of Indigenous peoples.

Francisco Da Costa set the tone when he opened, saying, "This land belongs to the First People of this area, known as the Muwekma Ohlone." He said that the ancient funerary places, like the hundreds of shellmounds in the area, are those of the First People and that everyone should act out of "respect for Mother Earth, the shellmounds and most of all for the spirits of ancestors." The shellmounds are sacred Indigenous burial grounds in Northern California that were desecrated by European settlers.

Corrina Gould (Carquin tribe of the Muwekma Ohlone), an organizer of the Shellmound Walk, thanked the ancestors and said the shellmounds represent the heritage of their children: "[The] cemeteries without headstones that are under Macy's, where we've stood and prayed, are for the children. ... This is where your ancestors are."

Perry Matlock, long-time shellmound activist, contrasted the respect with which European sacred stone circles such as Stonehenge are treated with the disgraceful hate crimes committed by Europeans on sacred Native American lands. He said the actions are "cultural genocide, acts of terrorism and ethnic cleansing" and called for the "preservation of all [Indigenous] cultural and grave sites."

Mona Stone Fish (Mohawk) decried the disgrace of thousands of homeless people living on the streets of San Francisco and the misconception that "they choose to be that way," saying, "Who starts out with that aspiration?" She chided the city on the fact that so many Native people are homeless.

Espanola Jackson, the spokesperson and liaison for the Ohlone Tribe, added that this hearing wasn't the first time the Muwekma Ohlone had come to San Francisco's government to seek respect for the sacred shellmound funerary places. For example, in 1992 a formal resolution had been passed regarding the shellmounds and there it sat, unenforced. "I hope this day [the city] will pass a stronger resolution and end the illegal removals of the contents and whole shellmounds in San Francisco."

Ohlone speakers raised the fact that they cannot even legally pray at the beach, as is traditional for them. They called upon the city to legislate their right to do so.

A young man sang a song in his Native language that he had learned from his elders. He pointed out that before their land was taken away, his people had sung and performed sacred ceremonies close to the beautiful ocean coastline, and also said "youth is the future."

A Mutsun Ohlone elder, Ann Marie Sayers, detailed the unnecessary difficulty the Ohlone have had due to the U.S. government's contemptuous refusal to officially recognize them as a "real" Native American tribe. This has hampered Ohlone efforts to reclaim their lands and culture, not the least of which is carrying on ancient ceremonies essential to their lives. She said that the European settlers' mission system had greatly contributed to the outright genocide of her people.

Santos Nic-Manaznilla of the Asociación Mayab spoke in Spanish instead of his Native Mayan language "because they only have a Spanish-to-English language interpreter." He spoke about the economic hardships the North American "Free Trade" Agreement has caused his people, descendants of the ancient Mayans. The tens of thousands of economic immigrants forced to cross the deadly U.S.-Mexican border, the thousands now working in low-paying hotel and restaurant jobs, are mistreated and disrespected, often working 14-hour days, to provide the bare necessities for their families. Those workers all too often cannot get necessary medical care for themselves or their dependents. He talked about the indignity and harm the Indigenous youth are experiencing, growing up in a hostile city with poverty, crime and violence all around them, never learning the proud history they come from.

Ana Pérez, assistant director of the Central American Resource Center, spoke about the fact that Indigenous peoples, in both the South and North Americas, have never been compensated for their losses. She raised that the distinct cultures of Indigenous Mexicans are not respected when they are lumped into the generality of "Latin@" in the U.S.

Larry (Cheyenne/Arapaho) said, "Native Americans here have no basic human rights." He spoke about the destruction of the environment, of the Sacred Mother Earth.

Lori Taguma (Lac Courte Oreilles), of the American Indian Child Resource Center, spoke of her need at one time to move away from the city back to the Reservation—to her cultural oasis. She recounted hearing her great-grandmother's experience of being forcibly taken from her tribal home on her own land, to a non-Native, racist boarding school. She discussed the fundamental need for "California Indigenous people to identify with their own land base."

A Miwok woman told about her own mother being taken away at the age of five to a boarding school. She stated: "No sacred site should be destroyed. ... Native American people used to be able to come to sacred sites for ceremonies." She ended with, "Enough is enough; I challenge this commission tonight ... to affirm" the rights of the people.

Tony Gonzales, a leader of the International Indian Treaty Council (IITC), noted that San Francisco might inspire other cities to hold hearings with their Native American communities and take action too.

Another IITC leader, Bill Simmons, spoke about the "terrorism that first came with the desecration of the sacred shellmounds of the ancestors" and that celebrating Christopher Columbus is like celebrating Adolf Hitler.

Health concerns raised

Other speakers raised immediate needs within the local community.

Mark Espinoza, director of the Native American Health Center in the Mission neighborhood, discussed the center's efforts to meet the needs of Indigenous people and any San Franciscans who enter its doors. He reviewed attempts by city agencies to close it down and "fold patients into other service centers" to save money.

Joan Benoit spoke of the work the Native American AIDS Project was doing to help local Indigenous people living with HIV/AIDS. San Francisco has the largest percentage of Native American communities with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. Benoit said that in order to continue, their efforts need more funding.

Rope Wolf, an Apache activist and member of the Bay Area American Indian Two Spirits, spoke for the needs of people with HIV/AIDS, as well as Two Spirit people and those in the LGBT community.

Alexandra Monk (Metis), a local HIV/AIDS educator, told about the federal Centers for Disease Control prediction that deaths from HIV/AIDS in the U.S. could "wipe out the Native American population by the next century."

Michelle Maas (Bad River Chippewa) discussed the mental health needs of the Native community. She urged Indigenous representation on all policy committees, saying, "The decisions made today impact the next several generations," and that statistical discrimination by non-reporting "invisibility, omission and exclusion" is unacceptable.

Native students Eddie Dang (Tsalagi/Sauk and Fox/Native Hawaiian) and Christopher Gomora (Anishinabe) spoke of the need for cultural sensitivity in education. Gomora observed that classes at the City College were being "taught by the oppressors to the oppressed."

Sally Ramon, a Tohono O'odham elder, advocated establishing a Native American Center where the local community of numerous tribes could safely go and practice important ceremonies. Mary Jean Robertson (Tsalagi) noted that currently the "Native American Cultural Center, with no location, is literally homeless."

A respected professor of American Indian Studies at San Francisco State University, Andrew Jolivette, brought many recommendations for the commission to act on. He noted the extremely offensive and "inappropriate statue of Christopher Columbus still prominently standing in San Francisco," and the need for an annual "Native American parade to celebrate their traditions." He asked for the endorsement of a formal B.A. degree in indigenous studies at educational institutions, increased local funding where federal funds under the Bush Administration are drying up, and the removal of the name "Junípero Serra" from the highway honoring a genocidal Spanish Roman Catholic mission priest—and renaming it in honor of Richard Oakes, a Mohawk leader of the 1969 Alcatraz occupation. Jolivette asked for a Native American charter school, a Native American Resource Room in the main public library, and for a cultural center. He called for Native American graves to be protected and preserved in compliance with federal law regarding the "housing of Native American Indian remains."

Others recounted their frustration with bureaucratic efforts to render Native peoples invisible. One Indigenous man spoke about statistics showing the groups of the many unemployed, which leave out the Indigenous identity of those who moved off their reservations for now non-existent jobs in the city. A teacher, Mishwa Lee, called for Indigenous educators in the schools, "not as unpaid volunteers, but as paid educators."

Anita Mendez (Washo) spoke, as did Morrigan Shaw (Tlingit), Frank Cullum (Chickasaw), and Myra Smith, Alberto Saldenado and Thomas Reyes. Kim Shuck (Tsalagi) gave several examples of dehumanizing "art" depicting Indigenous people in public places, including a huge mural at Mission High School. Racist public art, sports team names and mascots are a part of the overall stress and lack of respect experienced by Native peoples. Shuck said, "I can understand why these things might seem small, but statistically we die in huge numbers from stress-related disorders such as heart problems, diabetes and hypertension."

Ada Stevenson spoke about the 72 percent of Native American women who experience some kind of violence in their lives at the hands of white men.

A white couple visiting from Australia noted a recent Aboriginal victory there that included winning back a large portion of land taken from them by European settlers, including part of the city of Perth.

Hearing organizer Marcus Arana told WW: "The mayor's office stated at the hearing that the mayor is looking at creating a community task force on the issues raised. Since then the mayor's office has announced a policy symposium for Nov. 2. I have been requested to invite community leaders to participate and I have been requested to attend."

It remains to be seen if the commission and other San Francisco governmental bodies will conscientiously respond to the many serious concerns of the Native American community. Many Nations of the First People are watching.

Ok folks,

Today's news headlines are saying that in London, hate
crimes against Muslims are up 600% since the July, 7th
attacks. As disgusting as it is, it's not surprising
to me. What is worth noting is what certain British
officials are accusing to be a major contributor to
terrorism in Britian, and that is multiculturalism.

Gerald Howarth, the shadow defense minister in
Britian, told The Scotsman newspaper that "extremist
Muslims who see the Iraq war as a conflict against
Islam should be considered as treacherous as Soviet
sympathisers during the Cold War". He added, "There
are plenty of other countries whose way of life would
appear to be more conducive to what they aspire to.
They would be happy and we would be happy...If they
don't like our way of life, there is a simple remedy:
go to another country, get out." Asked what if these
people were born in Britain, he replied, "Tough. If
you don't give allegiance to this country, then
leave."

Another high ranking British official, Shadow Home
Secretary David Davis has criticized the government's
policy of multiculturalism as "outdated."

He went on to link terrorism in Britian with it's
policy on multicultural tolerance. He told the Daily
Telegraph of London, "Questions needed to be raised as
to how "the perverted values of suicide bombers" had
been able to take root."

Mr. Davis said, "people from different cultures should
integrate more and urged the government to "build a
single nation," and demand a "respect for the British
way of life."

Here are a few excerpts in an OpEd piece that ran
yesterday in the Canada Free Press. It's entitled
Suicide by Multiculturalism.

"Britain’s multicultural chickens have come home to
roost and Canada’s won’t be far behind. Daily the news
media reveals more and more about the extent to which
the concept of multiculturalism in Britain has failed
to achieve its stated goals. In fact there is now
strong evidence that the policy is detrimental to the
well being of society at large.

Through multiculturalism we sacrifice our own history
and traditions to avoid offending newcomers and making
sure that they are socially comfortable in their new
country. Our assumption is that our cultural mores and
our history are offensive to immigrants who do not
share the same cultural background. Hence, we abandon
our traditions and history in favor of being nice and
undergo the ridiculous contortions around Christmas
with the politburo’s attempt to eradicate it and
replace it with "winter fest" or some other travesty.
While our politically correct attitude toward our own
culture and history gives us the conceit that we are
being ‘inclusive’, to our immigrant neighbors we are
deeply into self-loathing."

Be sure to check out this articles in this link to understand the underpinnings of the anti-multicultural worldview:
http://www.aynrand.org/site/DocServer/newsletter_multiculturalism.pdf?docID=162

Finally, I'd love to hear what folks think about this issue.

Thank you,
Christopher

VANCOUVER - A sleeping senior at a B.C. extended care facility was sent to a hospital morgue on Saturday, after being mistaken for her dead roommate.

According to Fraser Health Authority spokesperson Helen Carkner, the mix-up occurred when a driver who works for the company that transports the dead from the facility to the morgue didn't check the woman's wrist band for identification.

Fraser Health Authority spokesperson, Helen Carkner.
"He was shown by the nurse which room the [deceased] resident was in and the nurse pointed to the resident and gave the name," she told the Vancouver Sun. "She went back to the nursing station to complete the paperwork [and] for whatever reason, he picked the wrong individual."

The driver left the 87-year-old woman on a gurney in a hospital corridor. The mistake was discovered after a porter saw her move, and an employee at the extended care facility realized the mix-up and called the hospital.

The woman was taken back to the care facility in an ambulance and is doing fine, said Carkner.

She said the woman's family was understanding about what happened and satisfied that action was taken.

The driver, who was recently hired, was immediately fired.

Hi folks,

I'm sure that many of us have had the experience at one time or another finding ourselves explaining our mixed heritage/ethnicities/identities to someone. I identify as mixed, and of color. I've been accused of being assimilated by some folks of color, and I've felt amongst some whites to be the token person of color, and I've had the experience of "passing" amongst whites and also folks of color.

I'm really beginning to notice how much the idea and identification of "race" has to do with the dynamics of power--who has it, who doesn't, who benefits, etc.

I've been having interesting conversations with my Arab and Muslim friends regarding the bombing in London last week. Right after the bombing happend, Arab and Muslim organizations were bombarded by the news media asking why London was attacked (like they knew). Some Muslim
leaders in Britain were urging their community to stay indoors, fearing a backlash of violence and retribution. While others were saying that it's
important for Muslims to be more visible in the public eye, doing community outreach, public service, etc. Some Muslim organizations here in the U.S. want to "prove" to Americans that they are patriotic and abhor violence.

I believe that the need to prove and justify one's culture, ethnicity, nationality, race etc. is an example of neo-colonial structural racism. The dominant culture, in this case Western civilization, is demanding the Muslim community answer for the actions of individuals. I believe that structural racism demands that the "minority" group prove itself to the dominant culture.

The very nature of structural racism/oppression is that it is invisible to the culture perpetuating it. That is why it is easy for a beneficiary of white priviledge to think that racism was defeated in the '60's. They speak freely about the merits of a "color blind society," and believe that we're well on our way already.

I think that the issue of structural racism is a difficult one to address, because as long as its existence can be denied, the dominant culture feels secure. When folks try to address it's exisence, the dominant culture finds it easier to get rid of the the threat to their security than it is to address the problem, thereby maintaining the staus-quo. This type of civilization can only be maintained through force.

To address structual racism, one also has to address power (more on this in a later post).

So, what are the choices for people of color, our white allies, and those who identify as mixed? I believe that mixed folks have a lot to contribute around this issue. How do we get away from repeatedly attempting to explain, justify, placate, and appease in order to gain meager acceptance or avoid reprisals, while being fully aware that to not do these things is risky itself?

a little introduction is in order. I'll be your moderator.

I was born into a GI family in the USA and have thus lived on and near fabulous military bases all over the lower 48 and AK. Locations include many of our vast and wild western deserts, like the Columbia River Plateau and the Mojave Desert. Others included the largest staging point for the Vietnam War, Tacoma, home of both McChord Air Force Base and Fort Lewis.

This is where I was born. My dad, whose family was anthracite coal miners in PA, quit HS to join the air force, and my mom, whose folks were dairy farmers, went to secretarial school to get a civilian job on base.

We're german, welsh, scots-irish, french, and native american.

I knew I was queer without the luxury of any role models. This was in the days when military doctors still used shock therapy on many lucky psychiatric patients, thankfully not me. I focussed on getting through HS, and moving to Seattle, the big city for us, where there was queers. I had no idea what they'd be like, but I had no choice but to go.

I went to a state university, where I studied economics and languages. I presently work with HIV positive people who are on a fixed income.

please feel free to fill us in on yourself.

Hi! I am triracial with a multiracial family--yick, I hate that word "racial" b/c it is just a social construct anyway. I am writing a book on the history of biracial and triracial culture in America up to the present day. The book will come out next year. I am seeking folks to interview to present diverse points of view that goes beyond my research and personal experiences. For the purposes of my book biracial is referring to people of African and European descent while triracial is Native American, African and European descent--though we all realize there are many ways to be biracial and triracial.

I am especially interested in hearing from people who are associated with traditionally recognized triracial groups such as the Melungeon, Lumbee, Red Bones, Creole, Guineas, Brass Ankles, etc., If you have a unique story to tell about yourself, your upbringing or your family history please send me a message. If it is a good fit and doesn't duplicate interviews I have already we can communicate via email. The book is considered an academic title, written for an academic publisher and will be used primarily in college settings to educate folks. Of course, my writing style is more relaxed than most stodgy academic titles and I like to break up the history and references with lively interviews written in a conversational style. I've got to tell you though, this is being written on a shoe-string; your payment will be helping folks better understand what it means to be biracial and triracial; hopefully you will help other people like you feel impowered by sharing your story; your name will be published and you will be publically thanked; I will give you a free, signed, first edition copy of the book; that is all I can afford. Sound interesting? Have a story to tell? Cool family photos you'd like to share with the world? Message me.

However, the White House is now looking to the expected election of PLO chairperson Mahmud Abbas to kickstart the stalled peace process.

I remember during the years Apartheid in South Africa. We marched through streets with slogans saying "Freedom in our lifetime" and how we all talked and dreamt of having the "democracy" America has.Now I am not so sure that is what we truly wanted. By reading everyones posts I got the idea that the segregation laws were not dropped from the constituional books, but rather repackaged...someone pls tell me how near or far is my feeling from the truth?

In South Africa it was made sure that our constitution included people of all color, religion, sex, language etc as long as they were South African. Again, via various posts in tribes, I got the feeling that some sectors (of race, sex or even religion) have been excluded from the constitution of America?

Someone educate me? :)

I've been thinking a lot lately about the difference in levels of diversity and tolerance across the globe. I live in Portland, OR and there are differing opinions as to whether or not Portland is diverse. What city do you all live in? Is it diverse? or, diversity friendly? How so? I also started a tribe called 'Multicultural Portland' for anyone who wants to further discuss the culture of the Pacific NW, and would like to extend an invitation for anyone who would be interested. Thanks, and I really would like to hear about how things are in other cities. -Anna

I make them guess and each time they guess wrong they have to take off an article of clothing. They soon find themselves stark naked at the naked truth of the mélange in me. Most think I am Brazilian, this however is not so. Here is the secret recipe:

1/2 cup of Dutch (mom is Dutch and I grew up in Holland)
1/8 cup of American Indian
1/4 cup of African American
A pinch of French, Irish and lord know what ever else because someone along the lines was raped and their heritage was then lost in the trauma. Sorry, got carried away... Any ways, my dad is what they call "Creole". I don't actually make people take their clothes off but I have a friend who is Brazilian but looks Indian and he had swindled people out of money for guessing wrong. This can be a lucrative business!
It has made me very sensitive to the experiences my children will have. I even get defensive at times because people can be rude. I do my best to learn about and celebrate each of their different heritages, and honor and educate them about themselves and each other.
I'm kinda new here and thought that I would like to pick your brains about a topic that is quite current in my life as I seek to actively shape my environment:

I generally find that most mult-cultural people I meet are sensitive to very many interpersonal issues. All those years of being asked "What are you?" tends to make you sensitive to how others perceive you and how you perceive others. That means that I am most comfortable with people who are multi-cultural or are aware of/sensitive to interpersonal issues.

I also know that all people cannot be all things to me. . . I have to communicate to others how what they did/are doing makes me feel so that they can respond. It's in this interaction that I/we can learn about one another and build community.

So, here's the question(s):
How do you know when you are doing too much educating? How do you know when a person/group is not worth your time and emotional investment anymore? Specific to the work environment, how do you know when the environment is too hostile to your beliefs/integrity?
